Il libro indaga alcuni aspetti del complesso rapporto che lega i principi di funzionamento di una struttura alla sua traduzione in forma costruita, tra le leggi che ne governano la ragione strutturale e le soluzioni tecniche che ne decretano la fattibilità costruttiva: un tema che si ritiene essenziale per il percorso formativo degli allievi ingegneri, spesso fortemente condizionato da un approccio didattico teso a sezionare il sapere all'interno di circostanziati e indipendenti confini disciplinari. Su questa linea si può leggere in negativo la progressiva trasformazione del profilo professionale dell'ingegnere contemporaneo: dalla originaria figura di progettista delle soluzioni tecniche, a quella di specialista-verificatore delle prestazioni strutturali, talvolta sprovvisto degli strumenti critici propri di un sapere che non si esaurisce solo all'interno di modelli di spiegazione scientifica, ma che richiede necessariamente di essere compreso entro una dimensione culturale più ampia, dove vivono, alimentandosi a vicenda, forme diverse di conoscenza, dalla Storia, alla Scienza, alla Tecnica, fino alle ragioni ultime dell'Architettura.

This book explores several aspects of the variegated relationship that connects the operational principles of a structure to its translation into written form, between the laws that govern its structural rationale and the technical solutions that decree the feasibility of its construction. This is considered an essential subject for the training of aspiring engineers, whose education is often strongly conditioned by a didactic approach that divides the knowledge of construction into circumscribed and independent disciplinary units. This same approach negatively connotes the progressive transformation of the professional profile of the contemporary engineer, from the original figure of a designer of technical solutions to that of a specialist-assessor of structural performance. The result is that such figures sometimes lack the critical instruments inherent to a knowledge that does not begin and end within models of scientific explanation, but has to be comprised within a broader cultural dimension featuring the coexistence and mutual nourishment of different branches of knowledge, including History, Science and Design through to the ultimate dynamics of Architecture.

Cet ouvrage reconstitue les relations entre la culture architecturale italienne et nord-américaine des années 1970, en prenant comme référence l'expérience brève mais significative de l'Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies de New York, qui depuis sa fondation en 1967 - à l'initiative de Peter Eisenman - Jusqu'au début des années 80, elle s'est imposée comme l'une des forces motrices les plus actives et les plus influentes du débat disciplinaire aux États-Unis. Plus que la simple reconstitution de ses près de vingt ans d'histoire, ce qui intéresse l'IAUS c'est justement sa mise en place, aussi et surtout grâce à son ambitieux projet éditorial et d'exposition, comme lieu privilégié de rencontre et de comparaison, non libre de contradictions, entre deux milieux intellectuels - le New York des cinq architectes et les expositions au MoMA, la Venise de l'IUAV d'Aldo Rossi et Manfredo Tafuri et les Biennales d'architecture nouvellement créées - géographiquement et culturellement éloignées, mais unies par la tentative de redéfinir la spécificité, le rôle et les objectifs de l'architecture au déclin de l'utopie fonctionnaliste. Eisenman d'un côté, Rossi et Tafuri de l'autre sont les protagonistes d'un débat complexe et multicouche qui voit des thèmes, des lieux et des personnages entrelacés de part et d'autre de l'Atlantique: un véritable «échiquier à trois rois» aux côtés en constante réorganisation. en ce qui représente, à bien des égards, le dernier âge d'or pour une idée de l'architecture comme pratique intellectuelle dans une vision théorique cohérente et définie.

City and territory are currently experiencing a phase of development, or crisis, depending on whether they manage to form the know-how to respond to the current exponential evolution. Know-how that has to make a critical assessment of the fabric of structures, cultures and inherited layouts. Between continuity and innovation, contemporary town planning culture creates the basis for a more flexible model that can seek out new continuities by interpreting the present discontinuity, dissent, difference, decentralization and dispersion. This implies a processual space and new aesthetics of sense and therefore presupposes new themes able to redefine the physical-relational relationships by combining cultural roots, functional requirements and spatial layouts.

The urgency for policies to plan and manage the European Mediterranean coastal landscape is now evident: along the Latin Arch exceptional landscape values are accompanied by a growing anthropic pressure that is speeding up its transformations, creating significant problems; it is here, more than in other places, that the challenge posed by the preservation-development pair emerges. This study looks at the strategies developed within three protected coastal landscapes that have taken up the challenge. Interpreted as test laboratories for landscape policies, they give precious cues for the planning and management of the ordinary coastal landscape.
